The city of San Juan Capistrano was officially created in 1776, making it one of the oldest established towns in California. Over the years, it was mainly used as a rural farming town, but in the early 1900s, the old Mission San Juan Capistrano was renovated, leading to a wave of tourism and city growth.
Today, San Juan Capistrano retains its historical background. You can still see the Mission (and its swallows) to take a step back in time. Of course, there are still plenty of modern amenities like world-class shopping, dining, and beaches to soothe any Southern California need. You won’t want to miss the history and enjoyment only San Juan Capistrano can offer.
San Juan Capistrano might have been founded by the Spanish, but in true California fashion, it’s now a melting pot of many cultures — especially when it comes to food. You can enjoy everything from French and Italian cuisine to Mexican and (of course) California American favorites. There might be a lot of history in San Juan Capistrano, but what you’ll really remember is the food!
With history comes landmarks. San Juan Capistrano is home to some of the oldest buildings in California. The iconic Mission San Juan Capistrano is full of historic architecture and tales to everyone to enjoy. For a more natural beauty, take a hike down the 1,000 Steps Beach to enjoy a little Southern California fun in the sun.
San Juan Capistrano is a nature-lover’s dream. Whether you want to relax on the sand at Doheny State Beach or explore the Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park, there’s always something to do in the area. And don’t forget to pet the animals and take a donkey ride at Zoomars at River Street Ranch on your way through!
San Juan Capistrano is a part of the top-rated Capistrano Unified School District. The district manages 59 schools and serves over 43,000 students in the area. In addition to the top public elementary, middle, and high schools, there are also several prestigious private schools in the area, including St. Margaret’s Episcopal School and the California Preparatory Academy.
